Application/Candidate/Citizenship Requirements:

Membership in the American Chemical Society and significant familiarity with one of the chemical sciences or engineering
disciplines (e.g., a doctorate or master's degree and equivalent work
experience). See website for the full list of qualifications.

How to apply:

The same application may be used to apply for multiple fellowships. ACS Members may apply for a fellowship by submitting the following:

  • ACS membership number;
  • a resume that details education and professional and community experiences;
  • which fellowships you are applying for
  • a letter of intent (2-3 pages) that outlines:
    • why you have applied,
    • why you are qualified,
    • what policy issues and situations interest you,
    • what you hope to accomplish as a Fellow and after the Fellowship year,
    • your participation in civic activities and/or public affairs, and
    • (for the Diplomacy Policy Fellowship only) personal certification of U.S. citizenship
  • two letters of reference sent directly to the ACS. Please include the addresses and telephone numbers for your references in your application. The letters of reference should address:
    • writer's relationship to the candidate
    • technical accomplishments and relative standing of the candidate among his/her peers,
    • candidate's interest and experience in applying his/her expertise to the solution of societal problems,
    • candidate's ability to communicate, both orally and in writing and to interact productively with individuals and groups,
    • candidate's maturity and depth of judgment, and
      an assessment of the candidate's professional future.

All completed applications are reviewed and applicants are selected for interviews that take place in February or March. Fellows' terms will begin September 2006. Send all application materials to:
