Fellowship Areas: AAAS Roger
Revelle Fellowship in Global Stewardship
The Roger Revelle Fellowship in Global Stewardship
was established in 1997 in recognition of Roger
R.D. Revelle, who was an internationally renowned
statesman of science. His interests were broad, and
he excelled across numerous fields of study.
PURPOSE: The Revelle Fellowship is designed to
provide a unique opportunity for an accomplished scientist
to address global stewardship issues by applying his
or her broad, multidisciplinary background toward solutions
to these important societal problems.
The Revelle Fellow will engage with professionals in
the public policy arena to strengthen his or her understanding
of the intricacies of environmental policymaking and
make practical contributions to the more effective use
of scientific and technical knowledge in federal decision-making.

as well as their education, fellowship placement, and
current position.
CRITERIA: The Revelle Fellowship seeks applicants
who embody the traits of its namesake, Roger Revelle,
including an exceptional ability to work across disciplines.
In addition to meeting the eligibility
and criteria requirements for AAAS Fellows, prospective
Revelle Fellows must:
-
Have an additional three years of post-graduate
professional experience;
-
Demonstrate exceptional competence in a field
of science or engineering that relates to global
stewardship;
-
Show evidence of multidisciplinary ability in
their educational background and in addressing societal
problems;
-
And, perhaps most importantly, have a strong
interest and some experience applying their scientific
knowledge toward the solution of policy problems.
PROGRAM: The Revelle Fellow will work for one
year, beginning in September, in Washington, DC, in
either the legislative or executive branch or a non-governmental
organization on domestic or international environmental
issues encompassed under the umbrella of "global
stewardship."
The fellowship provides the unique opportunity to address
sustainability challenges across multiple disciplines.
The focus will be on human interaction with ecosystems,
which includes, but is not limited to, population, sustainable
development, food, oceans, global climate change, and
related environmental concerns.
The program includes an orientation on congressional
and executive branch operations and a year-long seminar
series on issues involving science, technology and public
policy, as well as monthly career enhancement workshops.
AWARD: AAAS selects and sponsors one Revelle
Fellow each year. The Fellow receives a stipend, with
allowances for health
insurance, relocation
and professional
travel. Placement will be arranged with the assistance
of AAAS, and will reflect the Fellow's interests and
expertise.
After the fellowship year, many Revelle Fellows return
to their previous positions, some remain in the policy
realm in Washington, DC, or other locations, and some
pursue opportunities in other sectors.

"Our Roger Revelle Fellow played a major
part in shaping the Administration's programs
in climate change research and ocean observing
systems. He also worked on mail security and
decontamination issues following the anthrax
mail attacks. Being able to apply his scientific
training broadly made him especially available."
