On February 27, 2006, the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs honored four AAAS Diplomacy Fellows for their exceptional efforts in promoting U.S. environmental, scientific, and health policies internationally. The Fellows are: Angela Bednarek, Natalia Comella, Joe Kowalski, and Mayya Tokman.

Angela Bednarek received a Meritorious Honor award for improving the technical review of proposals to amend the heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants protocols to the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution.

Natalia Comella was honored for successful, sustained work in shaping and
contributing to U.S. engagement within APEC and the G-8 on defending
against bioterrorism. She also was part of team that received a superior honor group award for outstanding performance in organizing the first Senior Officials Meeting of the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza, held in Washington, DC on October 6-7, 2005.

Joe Kowalski was part of team that received a superior honor group award
for outstanding performance in organizing the first Senior Officials
Meeting of the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic
Influenza, held in Washington, DC on October 6-7, 2005.

Mayya Tokman was part of a team that received a meritorious honor group
award for exceptional vision and teamwork in organizing a symposium to
move forward the USG's efforts on basic science and mathematics
education in predominantly Muslim countries.
